A week in the life of PAB’s Digital Marketing Apprentice- Week 3

I passed!! Google analytics videos are now a past time for me. After 2 attempts I finally got 84% meaning that I can now count myself as being Google Certified. It wasn’t just watching videos that helped me understand what I was doing; I had to use Analytics to fully understand what the exam was talking about. By using it to look at client’s data I was able to visualise what the questions meant and where about the answers would be found.  I have had a lot of help from Sarah Johnson (account manager) and Shaun who have given me activities to complete to gain an understanding of how to use google analytics and what it is used for.

My first proper meeting happened this week and honestly it was quite nerve wracking. I am counting this one as my first proper one as the one that I went to, on my 2nd day, was so confusing for me. I didn’t understand what was being discussed so I just sat there with a blank expression on my face and pretended to have a clue. One tip I have is that if you just look intently at the person who is speaking it gives off the persona that you know what is going on.

Being someone who gets nervous in the most ridiculous situations, this meeting was a big deal for me. I had to actually contribute this time which had me sweating, luckily the clients were so lovely but this didn’t stop my cheeks from burning up as soon as I started to talk. My role at the moment is mainly doing Content Marketing for people, meaning that I work on blogs and social media. I do other things as well but this is my main area of expertise. For this meeting I came up with a 12 week content plan which includes mainly blogs, when social media posts are going up and the timings of anything that ever needs posting. I was pretty proud that I was able to come up with 12 different blog posts, the timings of them and social media posts to go up within a whole day! I am not a pro at writing blog posts (as you can probably tell) but I think I am getting there.

Trying to think of a quality content marketing strategy can be quite hard, especially when you don’t have long to come up with ideas. The way in which I came up with this particular strategy was by putting myself in the customer’s shoes and thought of things that I would want to know if I was considering using the companies services. Another good way is to ask people that you work with; just because you are the one who is supposed to do it doesn’t mean that you can’t ask others for ideas. Also, remember that google is available! You aren’t doing something that hasn’t been done before so look at other people’s blog ideas and use them as inspiration.

Practice makes perfect is something that I need to keep telling myself. I sometimes forget that I have only been doing this for 3 weeks and I make myself believe that I should know and understand everything that I am being told. Becoming an apprentice is hard, you get thrown into a work place that you probably don’t know a lot about, with people who you will have never seen and have to produce high quality work without knowing 100% what is actually going on. However, becoming an apprentice is one of the best things I have done as I finally believe that I am doing something that’s worthwhile and am working towards something that is going to do something for me. Even though it is extremely hard work at times and I have to do a full work day, it is so rewarding when you complete a piece of work and you, along with the people around you, actually understand what you have done.

I still haven’t got a creative sign off yet so I’ll say bye and I’ll talk to you next time.
